Research Approach

Diagnosis and therapies for inherited retinal diseases

Identified the genetic mutations responsible for several forms of inherited retinal diseases (IRD) by means of Whole Genome Sequencing.
Developed new animal models of inherited retinal diseases, which are being used to test new treatments.
Leading projects on the use of base editors and camelids’ ubiquibodies as therapeutical approaches for IRDs

Dr. Millán received his degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Valencia in 1992. He then completed residency training in ophthalmology at the Hospital La Fe in Valencia. He then started his doctoral thesis at the Department of Genetics of the University of Valencia and in 2000 obtained a position in the Medical Genetics Department at the University Hospital La Fe.
Dr. Millán is a leading expert in medical retina and inherited retinal diseases. His research focuses on the genetics and pathogenesis of these diseases, as well as the development of new treatments, such as gene therapy and gene editing. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has given numerous presentations at international conferences.
Dr. Millán is also a passionate educator and is a professor at the University of Valencia. He is dedicated to training the next generation of geneticists and improving the lives of patients with inherited retinal diseases.
